Roblox Launches New Age-Control Measures to Protect Young Users

In response to growing concerns over child safety, Roblox Corporation has unveiled a sweeping set of updates aimed at bolstering protections for minors on its platform. The company, beloved by children and teens alike, announced that it will expand age-estimation and verification processes to all users who access on-platform communication features plans that are set to take full effect by the end of 2025. These moves, designed to promote safer digital interactions, integrate advanced technology with parental oversight to create a more secure playing environment.

A New Era of Age Verification

Roblox’s Chief Safety Officer, Matt Kaufman, outlined the initiative in a recent company blog post. The changes include three integrated systems for verifying users' ages: facial age estimation, ID verification, and parental consent. This multi-layered approach is intended to replace the traditional method of simply asking users to self-report their age during account setup. The facial age estimation tool is particularly noteworthy. Users will be prompted to take a video selfie which the system analyzes to estimate their age. If the system is confident of their age, the user gains access to appropriate communication tools. Otherwise, they must verify their age through ID or parental consent. These verifications must be completed to access any text or voice communication features on Roblox marking a dramatic shift from the current standard where users simply confirm they are at least 13 years old.

Limiting Stranger Interactions

One of the most important elements of the announcement is the restriction on communication between adults and minors who aren't connected in real life. With the Trusted Connections system, Roblox will restrict interactions unless two users have a verified real-world relationship established via mutual QR code scans or phone contact imports.Through these boundaries, Roblox aims to prevent potentially predatory behavior and give families more confidence that kids are engaging only with known and trusted individuals.

Content Ratings Overhaul

Roblox is also refining the way it labels user-created experiences. The platform has partnered with the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC), enabling global rating standards. U.S. users will now see ESRB ratings, while players in other regions will see relevant equivalents like PEGI, USK, and GRAC.These labels will replace Roblox’s existing content maturity tags and help parents better understand whether specific games include elements like violence, language, or mature themes.

Addressing Safety Concerns and Legal Pressure

These robust updates come amid mounting scrutiny and legal challenges. The state of Louisiana recently filed a lawsuit accusing Roblox of failing to protect children from sexual exploitation criticizing its lax safety measures and arguing that prior solutions merely prioritize growth over child safety. The platform has defended itself, noting that its AI-based system Sentinel generated more than 1,200 reports indicating potential child endangerment in 2025, among other safety tools and moderation initiatives.Further scrutiny came after a study highlighted how easily young users could encounter explicit or disturbing content. This research prompted swift public backlash and intensifying demands for stronger safeguards.

Blocking Unrated Experiences

In another move aimed at reducing risk, Roblox will block access to most unrated games starting September 30, 2025. These experiences will only be available to developers unless they receive a proper rating. To preserve popular classics, Roblox will make exceptions based on metrics like user engagement and favorites, especially for games where creators are inactive. This measure is part of a broader policy update that restricts certain social experiences such as private spaces or adult-themed settings to age-verified users aged 17 and above.

A Step Towards Safer Play

Roblox’s expansion of age controls marks a significant escalation in its efforts to protect minors. By combining modern verification technology with stricter moderation and content labels, the company is positioning itself as a proactive leader in digital safety among gaming and social platforms. While critics and legal challenges remain, these updates demonstrate Roblox’s intent to build a safer, more developmentally-appropriate environment for its youngest users, and to encourage other platforms to follow suit.
