Timeline of Major Earthquakes in Afghanistan (2015–2025)

Afghanistan, situated at the convergence of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, is highly susceptible to seismic activity. Over the past decade, the country has experienced several devastating earthquakes, leading to significant loss of life and property. Below is a chronological overview of the most impactful earthquakes in Afghanistan between 2015 and 2025:

1. October 26, 2015 – Magnitude 7.5 (Hindu Kush Region)

On October 26, 2015, a powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck the Hindu Kush region, approximately 78 kilometers east-southeast of Taloqan. This earthquake resulted in 399 deaths across Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India, with numerous injuries and widespread damage to infrastructure.

2. April 24, 2013 – Magnitude 5.6 (Laghman Province)

Although slightly outside the specified decade, it's noteworthy that on April 24, 2013, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake occurred near Mihtarlam, the capital of Afghanistan's eastern Laghman Province. The tremors were felt in neighboring Pakistan and India, causing 18 deaths and 130 injuries, with 345 homes damaged.

3. April 10, 2016 – Magnitude 6.6 (Near Ashkasham)

A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck near Ashkasham on April 10, 2016, at a depth of 210.4 km. The earthquake resulted in 6 deaths and 46 injuries, primarily in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region. The tremors were felt in several cities, including Peshawar, Chitral, and Lahore.

4. June 22, 2022 – Magnitude 6.2 (Paktika, Paktia, Khost, Nangarhar)

On June 22, 2022, a shallow 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Afghanistan, affecting the provinces of Paktika, Paktia, Khost, and Nangarhar. The earthquake resulted in 1,052–1,163 deaths and 1,627–2,976 injuries. At least 10,000 homes collapsed or were severely damaged.

5. January 17, 2022 – Magnitude 5.9 (Badghis Province)

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the western province of Badghis on January 17, 2022, killing at least 26 people.

6. October 7, 2023 – Magnitude 6.3 (Herat Province)

On October 7, 2023, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake affected Herat Province in western Afghanistan. The earthquake resulted in 1,480 deaths and 2,400 injuries, with extreme damage reported in the affected areas.

7. March 21, 2023 – Magnitude 6.5 (Badakhshan Province)

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Badakhshan Province on March 21, 2023. The earthquake resulted in 21 deaths and 424 injuries, with landslides reported in the affected areas.

8. August 31, 2025 – Magnitude 6.0 (Kunar and Nangarhar Provinces)

On August 31, 2025, a devastating 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, particularly affecting Kunar and Nangarhar provinces. The earthquake resulted in at least 812 deaths and over 2,800 injuries. Rescue efforts were hampered by landslides and damaged infrastructure.

Conclusion:
Afghanistan's position along the active tectonic boundary between the Indian and Eurasian plates makes it highly susceptible to seismic activity. The recurring earthquakes over the past decade have underscored the need for improved infrastructure, disaster preparedness, and international cooperation to mitigate the impact of such natural disasters.
